A lot of people have been asking lately why the new Backup and Restore Center in Windows Vista can't back up files to tape drives the way the Backup Utility (ntbackup.exe) can in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Being part of an enterprise
Being part of an enterprise that has attempted to embrace D2D2T I would note that the data still goes to tape - the D2D2 part is great for restoring something from the last couple of days. The "T" part is still need for longer term storage - especially if you need to keep multiple generations. In smaller implementations D2T is still more economical if you want multiple generations or archiving capability.In short, tape is still required and D2D is fast but expensive on the enterprise level.
The annoying part about this
The annoying part about this is that tape is still the robust long-term storage solution. Is it really time to break down and buy backup software? Or better yet, maybe it's just time to build an XP box and put the tape drive in it. In any event it's extremely annoying!
