Lining up for the new Apple iPhone
Apple Computer's web site says that the new 3G iPhone will go on sale this Friday at 8am, and according to one observer, lines are already starting to form outside the New York City store.
According to Apple, new shipments of iPhones will arrive most days, AT&T retail stores will also carry the smartphones, and users can check online as to availability at any particular outlet. Nonetheless, Apple advises that they are sold "first come, first serve," and advises iPhone fans to "arrive early to get in line."
Apple Computer may be good at producing well-designed smartphones, but they are even better at generating hype by creating an impression of scarcity. But then again, I remember standing in line for hours for tickets to a "Yes" concert, and sure, it can be great fun if you don't have anything better to do, so go for it. But, if you're not inclined to camp out in front of an Apple store and have to go to work like the rest of us, I'm pretty sure that the folks at Apple are going to produce enough iPhones to go around.
